Courses:

CEP 810:  Teaching forUnderstanding with Technology

CEP 811: Adapting Innovative Technology to Education

CEP812:  Applying Educational Technology to Practice

Instructers:

   C. Mcmichael, L. Terry, L. Wolf

Description:

During my time in the Year One of the Masters of Arts in Educational Technologies, or more commonly referred to as the MAET program, we were introduced to all the things that we could do with the integration of applicable technologies in our classroom.  These three courses were al amazing and blended together harmoniously and were combined together into one and taken as a Hybrid Course.  A Hybrid Course is one that combines online learning with traditional face to face learning.  We covered many topics, ranging from various technologies and their uses, theories about what affordances and disabilities having instant access to the internet has done to the 21st century learner, and more.  The course had many focuses, one main one being Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge, or as we came to refer to it by, TPACK.

Along with that we got to "play" with many different technologies.

I use the term "play" but not in the sense that you might think, for members of the MAET program "play" simply does not mean messing around, but instead it was used as a tool of discovery.  We would be told what our new topic was and then told to investigate into it and learn about what it was, and what we could and couldn’t do with it during these times questions were not answered, which in the beginning was very frustrating.  But when these two were combined it yielded a greater learning experience, one that I have adopted in my own classroom.

It was soon realized that combining "play" with not giving any formal directions allowed for a greater learning experience

in the sense that we became more independent learners, getting to know the program and what it could and could not do gave us a closer connection to the formal directions that came after because we now had a experience and previous knowledge to pull from thus making learning the material easier.  Some of the programs and experiences we were introduced to were PiratePad, a google docs eques online collaborative word pad; Our digital research project; this is where two partners and myself created a web page dedicated to our research on 3D printers, this included us creating a pitch, a video, and then "selling" it at a moc conference we held; and many more.  These classes really helped me begin my journey strong and caught my interest in Technology in Education.

Summer 2013:

   Year One MAET

Courses:

CEP 800: Learning in School & Other Settings

   CEP 815: Technology and Leadership

CEP 822: Approaches to Educational Research

Instructers:

   J. Good, D. Henriksen

Description:

These courses, like Year One before it, was a hybrid course taken both online and face to face.  This second year combined three classes, listed above, into one amazing educational and meaningful experience.  These courses focused not only on technologies that we could use in the classroom but also the theory behind technology inclusion and application.  This was done through not only introducing technologies and letting us research them, but also asking us to think about the real applications it could hold in the classroom.  Because of the technological expanse we are experiencing right now some Schools believe that just incorporating some form of, or really any, technology will thus make the classroom a "21st century learning space".  That is where

this course made us think about what it really meant to be a 21st century learner

and the work that went into creating and fostering such an environment.  Along with this the course also introduced me to thinking critically about education, shining a harsh light on common misconceptions.  When those misconceptions came to light is when the focus on getting rid of those misconceptions, not only in ourselves, but how we could do so in others.  This was worked on through various forms of research and through the use of the TPACK framework,

guiding me into an awakening on education.

Learning is full of misconceptions, and if not addressed could yield a learning gap between those who do understand and those who don’t.  These courses ended up not only teaching me about tools and techniques for effective teaching, but also about how to become a leader in change.

Summer 2015:

   Year Two MAET

Instructers:

   J. Good, P. Mishra, C. Richardson

Description:

While taking this course I was introduced to the multitude of theories revolving around creativity in education and its connection to technology.  The required text that I read, Root-Bernstein’s Spark of Genius: The Thirteen Thinking Tools of the World’s Most Creative People, introduced me to a whole different way of thinking.  The text

discussed a multitude of ways of thinking, conceptualizing, and finally applying creativity into the classroom.

But the creativity did not specifically mean designing interesting and intriguing lessons, but more designing a space that fostered creative thinking.  We looked at how to use creativity in problem solving too, thus making us more apt to being able to solve problems on the fly while providing enriching and meaningful learning experiences. That, combined with the class discussions, interactions, and projects made me re-think what a "tool" really is, how one can use it, and the adjustments and manipulations that could be made in order to transform it into something new that could work for another situation.  This class helped transform my way of thinking and re-defined creativity in education.

Fall 2015:

CEP 818: Creativity in Teaching & Learning

Instructer:

   D. Jackson

Description:

This course was designed to introduce the learner about ways to incorporate Literacy Learning into their normal classroom design.  The course focused on researching into development of scaffolded reading and writing techniques in order to

Differentiate Learning,

appropriate application of these skills in the classroom, and the importance of gathering data and reflecting on it in order to close the gap between readers with low and those with high understanding and application skills.  During my time in this course I developed a case study wherein I taught a student a lesson, focusing on the items listed above.  This helped me realize all that I could do with Differentiated Learning and the help it can give my students so that they can do the best they can.

Summer 2016:

TE 846: Accomadateing Diffrences in Literacy Learners

Instructer:

   A. Heintz

Description:

In this course I learned about the benefits to teaching students in an online setting.  Some of the topics covered were those of creating a online course, creating a blended course which entails the students and teacher meeting in both a digital (online) space and a physical (school classroom) space, and the varying forms of teaching methods and theories revolving around those two main topics.

Along with learning about teaching students online we developed our own online course.

This included creating a online space for students to interact, share, and collaborate; creating video and screancasted lessons to help guide students; developing a scaffolded lessons that had clear learning targets in student friendly terms, and more.

   CEP 820: Teaching Students Online

Instructers:

   B. Dillman, S. Greenhalgh, S. Keenan, M. Koehler

Description:

This course was the final in the MAET program. It encompassed all that we had learned and involved me creating a digital space where I reviewed, reflected, and dreamed about what I have done and would like to do in the future.

In this online space I created digital portfolio

where I could display my work that I had created during my time going through the program.  This course taught me about the importance of creating and maintain a digital portfolio and the benefits that came with it.  It was a fantastic end to my master’s program, the reflections, revelations, and hopes for tomorrow shine through, like my feelings towards the MAET program!
